Based in the Mid Atlantic region, our short-term goals are to:
spread interest in ultrarunning;

Cadmium enters the physical body through intake of contaminated food, inhalation or drinking water of cigarette smoke. Louie’s preliminary data show an increase in the power of breast malignancy cells to migrate and invade through the extracellular matrix with prolonged cadmium exposure. The extracellular matrix may be the external barrier of an tissue or organ. Elevated invasive and migration capabilities are characteristic of malignancy cells’ capability to spread. Louie found that MCF-7 cells chronically exposed to cadmium express higher levels of SDF-1, a protein associated with tumor metastasis and invasion. How particular proteins, including SDF-1, contribute to the aggressive characteristics of the cadmium exposed cells requires further study, and understanding their part in cadmium-induced carcinogenesis provides additional insights to how heavy metals donate to breast cancer progression..
